Sophia says the strangest things. October 22, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Candace @ 8:19 pm

Here are some of the things that Sophia has said in the past few days:

1. “I’m looking for a man. I’m looking for a man for Mommy” (I have no idea where she got this one from. She watches children’s video’s but never television.

2. “I’m a street rat”. This gem was uttered out of the blue while we were in the car.

3. “That’s a great big monkey”. She said this one tonight about her apish daddy who was chasing her around the house.

Raising children is not easy but it sure does come with a dose of comic relief!

Early Christmas . . . New Camera! October 19, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Candace @ 9:14 pm

So our old camera has been dropped by children one too many times and the display only works when the lens cap is on. Well, we can’t really take pictures with the lens cap on, and I consider a camera a necessity, so . . . Zac just bought me a new camera for Christmas! This is my new baby. So it’s not a Mercedes like this, but we can still afford other necessities like toilet paper and food. So, I absolutely promise that I will learn to post pictures here so my huge following can come here for the daily happenings of the Hensley household.

Potty training update. October 1, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — Candace @ 8:34 pm

So it has been a few weeks since we started the dreaded potty training. For some reason in my mind, despite the fact that millions have been trained, I had this irrational fear that potty training Sophia would be impossible. Well, since this was the best day we have had I thought I would bury those fears once and for all and tell the world (ie. my mom, Zac and two or three others that visit here) that Sophia is pretty much potty trained.

First, I must say that this endeavor drove me to the cross many many times. I truly believe the LORD intended this time in my life to improve my prayer life. A week or so into potty training Sophia I realized that my patience was running low. The sugary snacks proved to be a good motivator for that first week. If I had to start over again I think I would use the same technique. That first week is crucial in teaching them to hold it until they can reach the bathroom and for Sophia, candy was the thing that got her there. Well, after about a week she started having more frequent accidents. She also would never go #2 in her potty. AAAAHHHHRRRGGGGGGG!!! That sums up my frustration, and I am pretty sure Sophia got the message. I considered putting her back in diapers. I learned quickly to pray for patience and not just success for Sophia. The LORD gave me strength and an extra measure of patience to ’stick it out’. I decided to wean her off the sugar and just use plain old instruction, and love.
For the past week I have been dealing with Sophia with more patience than I knew I had whenever she had an accident. I doled extra kisses and hugs, and just told her to “tell Mommy next time you have to go #2 so you can do it on the potty”. Well yesterday and today our baby put all her #1’s and #2’s in her potty chair, and believe me this is a big deal. This without any bribes or sugary enticements! Just lots of love and patience.
